Position Summary
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and professional environment throughout offices, production areas, warehouses, laboratories, washrooms, cafeterias, change rooms, and exterior facility grounds. The role performs daily cleaning and sanitation activities, waste management, supply replenishment, floor care, and specialized cleaning duties while adhering to company safety standards, compliance requirements, and site operating procedures. This position contributes to a safe workplace and supports operational excellence through quality cleaning services and teamwork.
Key Responsibilities
General Cleaning and Housekeeping
- Dust office furniture, desks, filing cabinets, windowsills, baseboards, partitions, and low air vents.
- Spot clean walls, partitions, doors, light switches, and other touchpoints.
- Clean and polish chrome, stainless steel, and other polished surfaces.
- Vacuum carpets, cloth furniture, mats, and carpeted areas.
- Dust mop, sweep, damp mop and wet mop hard surface floors.
- Strips and finishes hard surface floors manually or with power equipment when required.
- Wash walls, ceilings, stairs, and windows as required.
- Empty, clean, and disinfect waste receptacles and recycling containers.
- Collect and dispose of garbage and recycling according to established procedures.
- Remove full garbage bags and transport waste to designated disposal areas.
- Replenish washroom and change room supplies including soap, paper towels, toilet tissue, hand sanitizer, and other consumables.
- Clean and disinfect washroom fixtures and common touchpoints using approved cleaning products.
Area-Specific Cleaning
- Maintain cleanliness of offices, meeting rooms, reception areas, hallways, and common spaces.
- Clean washrooms, locker rooms, and employee change rooms.
- Clean warehouse floors, racks, shelving, and work areas.
- Clean laboratories and replenish supplies as required.
- Clean cafeterias, food preparation areas, storage rooms, coolers, freezers, and coffee stations.
Equipment Operation
- Safely operate cleaning equipment including vacuum cleaners, auto scrubbers, floor scrubbers, floor polishers, burnishers, carpet care equipment, compactors, and laundry equipment.
- Perform basic daily inspections and report equipment defects or maintenance requirements.
- Operate equipment only after receiving required training and authorization.
Exterior Maintenance
- Maintain entrances, exits, walkways, and surrounding areas.
- Remove snow and ice from designated areas using approved equipment and materials.
- Operate snow blowers and ice-melter spreaders where trained and authorized.
- Ensure safe access to facility entrances during adverse weather conditions.
Compliance, Safety, and Quality
- Follow all Standard Operating Procedures, Safe Work Procedures, and site-specific instructions.
- Adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices where applicable.
- Utilize approved chemicals and cleaning agents in accordance with training and product instructions.
- Wear all required personal protective equipment.
- Attend all required safety, compliance, and job-specific training.
- Report hazards, unsafe conditions, incidents, injuries, and near misses immediately.
- Participate in return-to-work and injury management programs when required.
- Ensure compliance with company Quality, Safety, Environmental, Human Resources, and Business Ethics policies.
- Work safely and collaboratively to support team and facility objectives.
Additional Duties
- Polish furniture and maintain finished surfaces as required.
- Disinfect telephones, shared equipment, workstations, and other high-touch locations.
- Support special cleaning projects, shutdown activities, audits, inspections, and facility events.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- Minimum Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
Experience
- Previous commercial, industrial, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, healthcare, or institutional cleaning experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently and follow instructions.
- Good organizational and time management skills.
- Basic computer skills for email, online training, and communication.
- Ability to work in office, manufacturing, laboratory, warehouse, and outdoor environments.
- Physically capable of standing, walking, bending, lifting, and performing repetitive cleaning tasks throughout the shift.
